Financial Information Release

Today we have released financial information based on the audited financial statements of RSLs for the year ended 31 March 2009. This is the first year that we have used our new streamlined online system for data input and as a result the 2009 figures are available some 6 months earlier than in the previous year. More than 90% of RSLs managed to make their submission by 30 September 2009. We therefore thank all of those who met this deadline and acknowledge the part that they have played in enabling us to make this information available to stakeholders in a more timely manner.

As with the 2007/08 financial year the tables have been reproduced in excel spreadsheet format allowing users to do some benchmarking and further analysis of their own. If there’s any additional data you’d find useful, please contact us and we’d be happy to discuss providing this.

Some highlights from 2008/09 are as follows:

• Turnover for the sector increased by 10.6% (2008 9%), to £1.12billion (2008 £1.01billion)



• Operating costs were £984million (2008 £899million), representing 87.8% (2008 89%) of turnover



• Staff costs, at £327.5million (2008 £307milllion), remained the single largest item of operating expenditure



• Long term debt exceeded £2billion (2008 £1.77billion) for the first time; and



• Interest cover across the sector fell again, but only marginally to 137.2% (2008 137.8%)
